National Night Out events canceled, others remain on track

Several National Night Out events that had been scheduled for tonight throughout the region have been called off due to the threat of severe storms.

However, several others remained on track as of 3 p.m.

Cancellations

• Lehighton Borough Police Department had been scheduled to have its event at Baer Memorial, but canceled, said police Chief Troy Abelovsky.

“The Lehighton Borough Police Department has been so excited to provide our community with an amazing National Night Out Event,” Abelovsky said. “However, Mother Nature does not seem to want to cooperate. With rain, heavy winds and possible hail in the forecast, the LPD feels it’s in the best interest of everyone to postpone our event for the safety and well-being of all involved.

“We want the entire community to be able to participate in the events that we have arranged for NNO 2024, such as Bounce Houses, Med Evac Landing, Fire Dept. demonstrations, as well as lots of food, fun and giveaways, many of which would not be able to occur if we receive the forecast weather.”

Abelovsky added “It is with heavy hearts that we postpone tonight’s event.”

However, he noted the police department has rescheduled its event for Oct. 1.

• Slatington Police Department posted on its Facebook page that it has rescheduled its event until Aug. 16 from 5-8 p.m. at the Northern Lehigh High School Stadium.

“Due to the pending weather and out of an abundance of caution, the Northern Lehigh Area National Night Out has been postponed. We apologize for the inconvenience, however, the safety of our community is our first priority.”

Events being held

• Jim Thorpe Borough Police Department posted on its Facebook page it was still planning to hold its event from 6-8 p.m. in Memorial Park.

“Unless we get severe storms, we will hold the event,” Chief Joe Schatz said. “Thank you for all your support.”

• Lehigh Township Police Department posted on its Facebook page it will start its event at 5 p.m. at Indian Trail Park, Lehigh Drive (Route 248) and Indian Trail Road, due to the weather forecast.

“We have plenty of room under the tents and pavilions. Come out for a great dinner, enjoy the raffles and music, and of course the 50/50 duck race down Indian Creek.

“Steel Creek Band as well as DJ Kenny will be under the pavilions setting the music mood. We may scale back a few things, but the kids will have plenty of prizes for completing their passports and lots of giveaways for all.

“We will only cancel due to lightning.”
