Volunteer firemen extinguish truck fire on turnpike

A father and son who observed a tire burning on a vehicle on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Sunday afternoon are credited with extinguishing the fire, state police at the Pocono barracks said.

Police reported Cole and Todd Crispin, who they identified as volunteer firemen from the Daretown Fire Department in Elmer, New Jersey, were traveling southbound at 3:02 p.m. in the area of mile marker 95.4 in Kidder Township when they saw the fire in a Ford F-150 that was towing a camper.

Police said the driver of the F-150 was William Adams of Quakertown.

Police said the Crispins put out the fire on the driver’s-side rear tire and exhaust system on the shoulder of the roadway.

They said Adams told them he believes the fire started from work being recently done on the vehicle. They said after examining the vehicle, Adams said he believes the rear tire was touching the exhaust system which caused it to get hot.

Personnel from the Bear Creek Township Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the remaining smoldering tire.

No one was injured in the incident.
