Charges filed in child abuse case; DA: Lansford woman impeded infant’s breathing

A Lansford woman has been charged Friday with attempted homicide of a 3-month old infant.

Abigail Horn, 18, the mother of the baby girl, was charged in Northampton County with two counts of criminal homicide — attempted, a first-degree felony; one count of endangering welfare of children — child under 18 continued course of conduct, first-degree felony; and two counts of aggravated assault, first-degree felony.

According to the criminal complaint filed by a Bethlehem City Police Department detective, the police department was contacted by the infant’s father and family members who were “very concerned about Abigail Horn causing significant harm to the infant.”

The baby’s father told police that when the baby was about 6 weeks old, he awoke to muffled cries from the infant, and found Horn standing above the baby with her hands smothering her in their home in Bethlehem. He intervened by forcefully moving Horn off the baby. She told him that the baby wouldn’t stop crying.

When the baby was about 2 months old, police said that Horn was staying at one of her family member’s house in Carbon County, when a family member awoke around 6 a.m. to the infant screaming. Police were told the infant’s screaming became muffled and then sounded like she was gasping for air. The family member found Horn with the baby on her lap. She took the baby from Horn and fled with the baby to another family member’s house to await for police.

The Mahoning Township Police Department arrived to the scene and spoke to Horn. According to police reports, Horn was observed calling her mother and telling her she was “losing it, not in her right mind, and always angry.” The police took her to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Carbon Campus, for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation.

Horn was released from the hospital on June 13, and the baby’s father was granted a protection from abuse order on June 14.

Bethlehem police said he spoke to Horn and she confirmed that she had impeded the baby’s breathing on the two reported incidents by placing her hand over her nose and mouth. She stated that the baby “wouldn’t stop screaming.” Horn confirmed that the family member came in the room “because she went from screaming to not screaming.”

Horn told the police she would do “anything to get the baby to stop crying even if it meant hurting her or anything like that.” She reported feeling “a lack of remorse during those incidents and did not care if the infant was alive or dead.”

On June 24 following a psychiatric treatment, the baby was with Horn during a supervised visit when a family member momentarily left them alone to go get dressed. In that short time span, the family member heard the baby scream in pain. The family member came back into the room and found Horn squeezing the infant’s body with her hands.

Photographs taken between May 25 and 30 by a family member before Horn’s psychiatric treatment, showed bruises in the baby’s chin, left leg, and left hand and fingers. Horn told the police she had caused the bruising out of anger. She said she pinched the skin on the baby’s arms and legs. And squeezed her hand to cause the bruising. Horn said the bruise on the baby’s chin was due to grabbing her chin with force while shoving a bottle into her mouth because she “wouldn’t take a bottle.”

Northampton County District Attorney’s Office request permission from Carbon County to prosecute the case, which was granted.
