Tamaqua police are seeking information on a man who attempted to rob a couple just before midnight Friday, and then stole a gun that one of the victims dropped during a scuffle.
According to police, officers were called to an area near the American Hose Fire Company for a report of a robbery of a handgun.
Police spoke to the victim, who said he was leaving the fire company and walking to his car in the parking lot near the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
As the victim assisted his wife into the car, a man approached and demanded money. The victim said the suspect was less than five feet away from him and had his hand in a bag which was pointing down as if there was something inside.
At that point, police said the victim pulled out his gun and pointed it at the suspect.
The suspect lunged at the victim and a struggle ensued. Police said the handgun fell from the victim’s hand and the suspect picked up the gun and ran toward the Tamaqua Train Station.
Officers immediately checked the area but did not see the suspect. They also stopped at all nearby gas stations to see if the man had visited within the last hour. According to police, officers also obtained video footage from the train station.
According to police, the suspect is a Black or Hispanic man who stands between 5’8” and 5’10” tall. He was wearing a blue or black hoodie and sweatpants, along with a mask or “gator” on his face. He wore dark colored shoes, possibly sneakers.
Personnel from the train station were contacted and assisted police with all video footage.
Anyone with information or possible camera footage of the suspect, especially residents of the North Ward, should contact police at 570-668-5000.
