Woman charged with stealing $3,500 worth of jewelry from boyfriend’s grandparents

A Lehighton woman is scheduled to appear in court for allegedly stealing more than $3,500 worth of jewelry from her boyfriend’s grandparents.

Rebecca Walck, 19, faces charges on one count each of theft by unlawful taking — movable property, and receiving stolen property.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Matthew Arner of the Lehighton Borough Police Department:

On Sept. 19, the victims, a married couple, came to the borough police department to report missing jewelry.

The female victim said she does not regularly wear her jewelry due to health issues, and that she kept her jewelry in a box, which was kept in a drawer in her bedroom.

She said that on Sept. 18, she checked on her jewelry and found several pieces missing, including a white gold wedding band set (two rings) valued at $1,510, and two bands — one white gold and one yellow gold valued at $1,985 (for both).

She did not believe any other jewelry was missing at that time.

The couple said that they were suspicious of their grandson’s girlfriend, identified as Walck.

They said that Walck would come to the house with their grandson and ask to use the bathroom upstairs.

They both said that she would be in the bathroom for a long period of time before coming back down.

Arner checked the Precious Metals Database to see if any of the items were sold to participating businesses, and discovered that on Sept. 6, Walck sold four rings to Lehighton Coin.

Arner went to Lehighton Coin and spoke with the owner, who provided a receipt showing a copy of Walck’s Pennsylvania Identification Card. She also signed the receipt indicating that the items were her property.

The receipt indicated that she sold four rings: one gold ring and three white gold rings with precious stones.

She received $158 for the sale.

The receipt indicated that the date and time of the transaction was Sept. 6 at 2:55 p.m.

The owner indicated that she came to the store by herself when this transaction was made.

He also verified that the person who made the transaction presented ID as Walck, and he identified her as Walck through that.

Arner contacted Walck by phone on Sept. 25 to arrange an interview.

Walck said that she would be right up to the Lehighton Police Station, and that the victims were not going to press charges.

Walck arrived at the station later that day and invoked her rights.

Walck is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday before District Judge Eric Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
