Parryville Council backs Eagle Scout project

Parryville borough council unanimously voted to support the efforts of Eagle Scout candidate Ryden Chapman.

Chapman, 17, presented his proposal to create a Free Little Lending Library at Parryville Park at Monday night’s meeting. His mother, Theresa Chapman, the chairwoman of Troop Communications, explained that he is a member of two scouting troops, one in Topton (Hawk Mountain Council) where he currently lives, and one in Parryville (Minsi Trail Council) with the Troop where his Scouting career began. If he completes his requirements, he will be Parryville’s first Eagle Scout.

Earlier this month, Mayor Tom Kobal honored the last three Eagle Scouts from the Orioles venue with awards from the Marines. The Orioles have discontinued their Scouting program.

Chapman said, “A lending library would be a big benefit in many ways. It is a great opportunity to recycle pre-owned books, help others explore the great world that can be found in books, while also boosting the appeal of the local park.” Chapman said that he uses his “knowledge from Scouts in everyday life while upholding the Scout Law.”

Chapman’s project will align with upgrades to Parryville Park. The Palmerton Lioness Club donated $200 to the park, and efforts are underway to replace, through warranty, faulty equipment and install new equipment previously purchased including seesaws and benches. A grant from the Pocono Visitor’s Council will provide fair-share funding to improve the basketball court.

In other news, council unanimously agreed to transfer banks from M & T Bank to First Northern Bank & Trust in Palmerton. Administrator Meghan Sander indicated that Parryville “needs a closer bank” and “mapped out all local banks to find the closest.” Parryville only holds a checking account and does not have any outstanding bank loans.

The Parryville Fire Department will be hosting a hot roast beef dinner and bake sale from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Parryville Fire Company.

The annual Parryville Picnic will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. July 20 and will include live music by the Side Effects. The event also includes a basket raffle, games and food. All are welcome.
