Jay Smar, a local folk musician, will perform live at Coaldale's Angela Triplex Theatre at 3 p.m. Sun., Sept. 13. The event is free and open to the public.
Smar graces his audiences with an acoustic buffet of traditional American and original folks, old-time mountain music, bluegrass, gospel tunes and coal-mining songs of northeastern Pennsylvania armed with two guitars, baritone vocals, claw-hammer banjo, and fiddling, singing, and flat-footin ' (a form of clog-dancing).The Pennsylvania House of Representatives recently recognized Smar, a native of the Panther Valley, for over 30 years of preserving coal heritage through original and documented song.Over the last five years, Smar's accomplishments include two Scotland tours, performing twice at the Philadelphia Folk Festival twice and recording music for the Welsh BBC movie, "The Welsh in America."The Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour selected Smar to participate on its professional touring roster.The free concert was made possible from a grant received from the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts, Pottsville, and Deb and Mike Danchak, owners of the Angela Triplex Theatre.For more information, call Kathy Ruff, Coaldale Revitalization Committee, at 570-645-3059.
