PSP Bethlehem - accidents
State police at the Bethlehem barracks reported the following accidents:
• Matthew E. Sabb, 57, of Kunkletown, was uninjured when he crashed his vehicle while swerving to avoid a deer that entered his path on Mountain Road, Washington Township, at 5:19 a.m. May 24.
Police said he was driving a 1999 Nissan Altima westbound when it took place. The Altima went off the road and struck a utility pole. The car was towed from the scene.
• Donald C. Eckhart, 78, of Walnutport, was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5:49 p.m. May 5 on Main Street in Washington Township.
Police said he was transported by personnel from the Northern Valley ambulance corps to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.
Police said he was driving a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek eastbound when it left the roadway and struck a boulder, causing it to roll over and come to rest in the middle of the road. The car was towed from the scene.
• Michael Russo, 45, of Laurys Station, is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle crash at 12:11 a.m. May 16 on Wynnewood Drive, North Whitehall Township.
Police said he was driving a 2018 Jeep Wrangler that crashed, and police said they observed signs of impairment on him. He was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.
Police said a 39-year-old man, also from Laurys Station, is a victim in the incident.
• No one was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 8:06 a.m. May 23 at the intersection of Route 873 and Jay Street in Washington Township.
Police said it happened when a 2013 Nissan Versa driven by Ozelle M. Madsen, 19, of Easton, collided with the rear of a 2002 Hyundai Accent operated by Lorie J. Chandler, 67, of Slatington, after the latter reduced speed before attempting to turn onto Jay Street.
Police said Madsen was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
• Police said Susan J. Bortz, 71, of Slatington, was involved in a two-vehicle crash at 6:59 a.m. May 23 at the intersection of Old Mill Road and Main Street in Washington Township.
They said she refused treatment at the scene.
Police said the incident occurred when Bortz, driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza, was making a left turn onto Old Mill Road when she pulled out from a stop sign into the path of a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 17-year-old girl from Slatington. Police said both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damages.
They said Bortz was cited for the incident.
• Angelina M. Romito, 22, of Nesquehoning, was injured in a crash at 4:18 p.m. May 26 on Route 873 in North Whitehall Township.
Police said she was transported by personnel from the Northern Valley Ambulance to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.
Police said she was driving a 2008 Mercury Mariner that struck the rear of a 2010 Nissan Frontier operated by Eric D. Minnich, 46, of Schnecksville, while attempting to turn left onto Oakwood Lane. Minnich was uninjured.
Police said the Mariner was towed from the scene.
They said Romito was cited for following too closely.
• Donald Miller, 52, of Slatington, is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run after an incident at 5:22 p.m. May 2 at 3337 Old Post Road, Washington Township.
Police said he was driving a vehicle that left the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving a 2011 Jeep Wrangler and a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup.
The victim is a 22-year-old man from Bath, police said.
