2 charged after home invasion, assault

A Montgomery County pair face a slew of charges stemming from a Lansford home invasion and assault which police describe as “an act of vengeance” following an overdose death in April.

Megan Creveling, 26, of Colmar, and Joseph Vangoethem, 43, of Hatfield, are charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, four counts each of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, six counts each of simple assault, criminal trespass and harassment.

Vangoethem is also charged with use of an incapacitation device, two counts, and possession of instruments of crime.

Both are in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $150,000 each. A preliminary hearing before District Judge Beth Dodson is scheduled June 26.

According to court papers, Lansford police responded to 1 Springgarden St. just after 6 p.m. April 17 for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

The initial report stated two men and a woman were fighting in the street, and a witness to the assault told police that a man had been struck with a blunt object and stunned with an electrical incapacitation device. The man and woman then fled in a black pickup truck.

Police arrived and found two men who were assaulted outside 42 E. Ridge St. One of the men said that Creveling along with a man, who was later identified as Vangoethem, forced their way into the 1 Springgarden St. residence.

Inside, the pair assaulted the two men with a metal pipe, and Creveling was armed with a handgun and electrical incapacitation device.

The men, fearing for their lives, fled the residence onto Springgarden Street, where Creveling and Vangoethem continued to assault them with the pipe, court papers said.

One of the men had injuries consistent with being struck with a blunt object, while the other said Vangoethem attempted to hit him in the head, but caught the brim of his hat, court papers said.

Police found evidence of a break-in and other damage, such as shattered glass. Video surveillance also showed the black pickup arriving near the home, and parking on East Ridge Street just before 6 p.m.

The footage shows Creveling and Vangoethem exiting the truck, breaking into the Springgarden Street residence and pursuing one of the men into the street, where Creveling stuns him with an electrical incapacitation device and Vangoethem strikes him with a metal pipe, court papers said.

One of the men assaulted told police that Creveling attempted to shoot him, but he knocked the firearm out of her hand. The other man assault told police that Creveling attempted to fire the gun, but it jammed.

Vangoethem also contacted the Lansford Police Department and spoke to Chief Kyle Woodward, attempting to negotiate away any charges or jail time for Creveling, and claimed he deserved the charges, court papers said.

Police also obtained text messages that show Creveling and Vangoethem conspired to go to the Springgarden Street residence as an “act of vengeance” following the death of Creveling’s brother, Matthew Creveling, court papers said.
