The West Penn Township supervisors approved the final plan for a solar farm land development project near the intersection of Ash Circle and Ridge Road.
Approval for the Gregory and Jodi Duschak Solar Energy Collection Land Development, which passed by a resolution at Monday’s supervisors’ meeting, is contingent upon developers satisfying comments required by ARRO Engineering. It will also need approval from the Schuylkill County Planning Commission.
The plans call for 63 rows of solar panels on 34 acres of private land zoned for agricultural use.
Supervisors granted conditional approval to preliminary plans in May on a recommendation from the West Penn Township Planning Commission. Since then, the township planners reviewed recent changes and recommended that supervisors approve the final plan submission.
A public hearing on a zoning ordinance for solar energy systems is scheduled for the supervisors’ July 2 meeting.
In an unrelated matter, the board preliminarily approved the purchase of 10 picnic tables for the J.E. Morgan Park.
The price for the tables - about $832 each - was more than what supervisors’ Chairman Anthony Prudenti expected.
The price, he noted, was with a $400 discount per table.
Supervisor Glenn Hummel noted that the picnic tables are made of a durable plastic.
“They will last forever,” he said.
Before the purchase is made, the board will see if the tables might qualify for funding through the Community Development Block Grant program.
In an effort to defray the cost, supervisors also noted that they have made donation requests to several township residents and businesses.
