Lawmakers tour sites slated for upgrades

Last week, state officials toured two projects in Carbon County that have been awarded $500,000 in state multimodal funding.

Sen. Dave Argall and Rep. Doyle Heffley visited two key infrastructure project sites in Lansford and Bowmanstown.

The pair visited Brimble Wall in Lansford, which is in crumbling and needs to be reconstructed. Lansford received $313,000 in state multimodal funding for the wall replacement project.

The road the wall supports is an important access point for emergency vehicles on the west end of the borough.

Lansford has partnered with Carbon County through the Community Development Block Grant program in the hopes of completing the project, but it had been delayed last year once bids came in higher than anticipated.

The wall, in addition to carrying a road, is threatening a home and yard.

In Bowmanstown, officials walked Lincoln Avenue, which serves as the access road to the borough’s wastewater treatment plant but has deteriorated significantly and needs to be reconstructed.

Bowmanstown received $187,000 for the project.

Earlier this year, the borough submitted a Community Development Block Grant application to Carbon County for phase 1 of the project.

Local share grants

Local share grants were also approved in Carbon County:

• Beaver Meadows: $150,000 to complete the construction of the Memorial Park pavilion.

• Carbon County: $73,581 for improvements to the American Legion Post 314 building in Lehighton. In October, the Carbon County Commissioners submitted an application on behalf of the legion. The money will be used toward electrical renovations and the parking lot rehabilitation at the legion.

• Carbon County: $68,423 to purchase propane training equipment to prepare first responders for how to safely navigate propane and natural gas emergencies.

• Jim Thorpe: $67,207 to purchase speed alert and safety message signs, helping to control traffic flow during the busy summer months.

• Lansford Borough: $252,466 to renovate a former church into a muti-use public facility containing a Second Harvest food pantry, meal center, public recreational facility, local outreach office, job support, and county assistance services.

• Lansford: $33,362 to purchase new protective fire gear and a new radio for the Lansford Fire Company.

• Packer Township: $100,000 to remove and replace storm sewer piping and culverts along Grist Mill Drive.

• Summit Hill: $56,800 to develop plans for a new visitor’s center operated by the Summit Hill Historical Society.

Local Share Account funding is generated by casino gambling and redistributed to improve communities in the surrounding area. Funding is awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an independent agency created by the General Assembly to administer investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
