Bears roll into D-11 title game
NORTHAMPTON - The Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse team played at Al Erdosy Stadium for the third time in the last 10 days - and once turned in an overpowering performance.
After rolling to a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference wins in the home stadium of the Konkrete Kids last week, the Bears enjoyed the same type of success on Monday night in the District 11 Class 3A semifinals.
No. 1 seed Pleasant Valley faced No. 4 seed Nazareth for a third time this season, and the Bears made quick work of the overmatched Blue Eagles, posting a 19-4 victory.
After an early 1-1 tie, Pleasant Valley took control behind junior Devon Bush, who scored a game-high seven goals, with four of them coming in the first quarter.
“It’s good to get that lead in the beginning of the game because then you get to slow down and catch your breath,” Devon Bush said about the Bears 7-1 first quarter advantage. “I like facing Nazareth. It’s fun to play them.
“We knew at the point of the season, there’s no margin for error. It’s win or your season is over. But I wasn’t nervous. I had a good feeling we were going to play well and pull off a win.”
The majority of Pleasant Valley’s scoring this season has have come from both Bush and Rylee Rath. Rath added five goals last night, as the pair of underclassmen combined for 12 of their team’s 19 goals.
“Nazareth came out strong on defense,” Pleasant Valley coach Toni Bush said. “They hadn’t thrown a double face-guard at us in our two previous games. But we kind of anticipated that tonight, but you can never be sure because they had just face-guarded Devon in previous games.
“They threw the double face-guard tonight. But we adjusted, and our offense worked together well to try to balance out that face guard.”
The victory improves Pleasant Valley’s record to 21-0 on the season.
“We take it game-by-game,” said coach Bush. “It’s been an incredible run. I’m very proud of the team. These girls are such stellar athletes, and their dedication is incredible.
“Their dedication throughout the year is inspiring to see. What they sacrifice as kids to get to this level, but this is the reward they get to see ... this incredible season. But it’s not over. We have another one we have to win on Wednesday.”
The one that Bush referred to comes against a team that Pleasant Valley is familiar with - a team that defeated it in the District 11 championship game last season.
The Bears get a chance for redemption Wednesday night when they face Easton at 7 p.m. on Stabler Field at Lehigh University.
“It’s deja-vu, but hopefully this year we are prepared for anything that they bring,” said coach Toni Bush said. “The girls want it really bad. I think they’re going to be playing with a lot of heart and determination in this game.”
LET”S WORK TOGETHER ... Although junior Devon Bush and sophomore Rylee Rath are the top scorers for the Bears, they’ve received plenty of help. “It’s just about working together,” Devon Bush said. “Me, Rylee and the rest of the girls ... as long as we work together and are looking for the openings and lanes, that’s what pulls us all together.”
BIG NUMBER ... Pleasant Valley put up an incredible 29 shots in the contest.
MORE OFFENSE .. In addition to the big scoring games from Bush and Rylee Rath, Pleasant Valley got two goals apiece from Oliva Iandoli, Alivia Rath and Samantha Miller. Morgan Rylas added one goal.
REGULAR SEASON ... Pleasant Valley and Easton met once during the regular season, with the Bears posting a 12-5 win April 16.
