Tamaqua Area Drama Club’s musical starts Thursday
The Tamaqua Area Drama Club is putting the finishing touches on “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”
The musical will be performed at 6 p.m. Thursday, and at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium.
Students began preparing for the show in the fall, said Johanna Ulicny, the club’s marketing director.
“It has a lot of different music, and it can be challenging vocally,” she said.
At a recent rehearsal, students nailed the performance and songs - right down to the Cockney accent.
The story takes place in 19th century London. Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, has returned to seek vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife.
According to a synopsis, “The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up and the carnage just beginning.”
Due to the storyline, it is not recommended for young children, Ulicny cautioned.
She noted that Sweeney Todd is now on Broadway.
And recently, the Today Show aired a clip of the local students asking Sweeney Todd actress Sutton Foster a question.
“They were all excited about it,” Ulicny said of the national attention.
Leads in the show are Denny Krell as Sweeney Todd; Cecilia Ulicny as Mrs. Lovett; Timmy Berg as Anthony Hope; Corabel Najarro as Johanna Barker; Christopher Smith as Tobias Ragg; Stephen Behun as Judge Turpin; Aidan Stellfox as Beadle Bamford; Amaris Means as Beggar Woman and Hunter Ruch as Adolfo Pierlli.
The performance is under the direction of Adriane Drum. Caitlin Miller is in charge of hair and makeup.
