Mahoning Twp. supervisors settle in new headquarters

Mahoning Township has settled comfortably into its new digs on Route 443.

Township supervisors held their first meeting at its new headquarters, the former Diaz building just west of Normal Square, last week.

The total project cost about $1.3 million.

Supervisor Ronald Reeser was complimentary of the two-story building located on about 14 acres of land at 2175 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive West.

“I think it turned out fantastic,” said Reeser, who added the late Supervisor David Pollock, along with his Reeser’s brother, former Supervisor Brian Reeser, were instrumental in seeing it come to fruition.

Reeser also acknowledged township secretary/treasurer Natalie Haggerty and her husband, along with township secretary Barbara Kester and her husband, were extremely vital to ensuring the building would be ready to move into.

“Natalie and her husband (Shawn), and Barb and her husband (Kyle) spent a lot of time (on their own time),” Reeser said. “I think they deserve some recognition.”

The building features 5,300-square feet upstairs, and 6,300-square feet downstairs. The Mahoning Township Police Department will use the lower level, with the township offices on the second floor.

Haggerty noted during a walk-through tour of the building earlier in the day that the township’s administrative staff has been working from out of the building since Feb. 19.

Aside from the township’s administrative offices, there is also a board meeting room, executive session room, filing room, kitchenette, and zoning and sewage enforcement officer office.

The police department has office space, holding cells, and an evidence room, among other features.

Haggerty said the police department is expected to move into the building by April 1, and added both the township and the police department have been issued occupancy permits.

The former medical office on Route 443, just west of Normal Square, was purchased in July 2021 for $375,000. The building and land was assessed at $595,000.

The Mahoning Township Police will use the lower level, while the township offices are on the second floor.

In January, supervisors approved a quote of $11,000 from Magnum Excavating for a new septic system at the former Diaz building at 2175 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive West.

In a related matter, the board in January approved the land lease of the Diaz property to Nev & Nise Produce Greenhouse.

In May, bids for the township’s new headquarters came in at $915,201.

The township’s former building was constructed in 1969. The supervisors’ meeting area had been on one side and Mahoning’s police force on the other.
