A 71-year-old Ashland woman died when she was struck by a vehicle at 6:18 p.m. Saturday on Centre Street in that borough.

State police at the Frackville barracks said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said she was crossing Centre Street from the south side to the north when she was struck by a 2020 Jeep Wrangler that was traveling west. Police did not identify the driver of the vehicle.

They said the driver of the Jeep swerved in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid striking the woman. They said she stepped in front of the vehicle, did not use the crosswalk and did not yield to traffic.

After being hit, she was thrown to the ground.
