Carbon County officials are stressing the importance of filing building permits with the county tax assessment office as part of the law.

On Thursday, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said that under the law, municipalities are required to send all new building permits to the county tax assessment office by the first of every month in order for the new buildings to be properly assessed.

However, there are some municipalities not complying with the rule.

“There are a few municipalities who are lacking in the reporting,” he said, noting that one municipality, which he didn’t name, has not turned in a building permit since 2018.

Nothstein brought up one recent complaint from a township supervisor asking why wasn’t a building put on the tax rolls. When it was looked into, it was that the municipality didn’t file the permit with the county.

“Municipalities have to understand that they are the ones losing revenue when properties aren’t put on the rolls and the property is properly assessed. They’re losing money. The county is losing money and the school districts are losing money and it puts a greater tax burden on the rest of the taxpayers,” Nothstein said.

The county sends out letters annually to municipalities notifying them of the requirement so Nothstein said officials are “fully aware” of the matter.
