The Times News is asking people to write letters on different subjects of interest each month.
This month we are asking readers to write about the tire burning proposal at the Panther Creek plant in Nesquehoning.
The Panther Creek power plant, a waste coal-fired power plant in Nesquehoning that is home to thousands of bitcoin mining machines, submitted a permit proposal last summer to the Department of Environmental Protection requesting permission to burn tire derived fuel - shredded tires mixed with culm or waste coal and then burned at a high temperature.
Panther Creek wants to use it as a supplemental fuel up to 15% by weight on a monthly basis up to approximately 78,000 tons annually. The material would be chipped off-site before being delivered to the plant.
Environmental organizations and nearby residents have raised concerns because of the risk to human and environmental health.
What do you think?
Voice your opinion on the subject in 350 words or less. This letter would be in addition to the regular monthly letter.
The same rules apply. All letters must be signed and include the author’s town with a phone number in order to confirm the letter.
We reserve the right to edit letters and to refuse letters that have libelous content.
