State police at Frackville - crashes

State police at the Frackville barracks reported the following:

• A 2006 Chevrolet became stuck in a ditch in East Brunswick Township after its driver attempted unsuccessfully to make a three-point turn.

It happened at 11:10 a.m. Jan. 26 on Summer Valley Road. The vehicle was removed from the ditch by a towing service and had no damages.

• Steven E. Hunt Jr., 45, of Pottsville, was cited for careless driving after a one-vehicle crash at 1:35 p.m. Jan. 23 on interstate 81 in Ryan Township. He was uninjured.

Police said he was driving a 1994 Dodge Dakota southbound when he fell asleep. The vehicle left the roadway, traveled along the west side of the road for approximately two-tenths of a mile and landed in a ditch.

• Julian D. Hanicak, 22, of Exeter, was cited after a one-vehicle crash at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 on the Interstate 81 connector (State Route 8017) in Kline Township. He was uninjured.

Police said he was driving a 2012 Toyota Rav4 eastbound on the connector when it struck a concrete median on the left side of the road and hit a guide rail on the right side of the road. The Rav4 was towed from the scene.

• Lori J. Vargas, 53, of Mahanoy City, was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 10:26 a.m. Jan. 21 on Interstate 81 in Delano Township.

She was transported by personnel from the Mahanoy City Ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.

Police said she was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound when it left the right side of the road and struck an embankment before rolling onto its roof and coming to rest in the grass on the right side of the road.

The Tahoe had disabling damages and was towed from the scene, police said.

Vargas was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

• Charles K. Knight, 71, of Sweet Valley, was sustained suspected minor injuries in a one-vehicle mishap at 5:10 p.m. Jan. 24 on the Lofty Road in Delano Township. Police said he refused a medical transport after the mishap.

They said he was driving a 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 southbound when he lost control of it while approaching a left-hand curve. The vehicle traveled about 90 feet down into a ditch on the south side of the road. Police said while the vehicle was traveling into the ditch it became airborne, traveling over rocks and downed trees on the side of the road, and then struck a tree head-on.

The Ram was towed from the scene.

• Renee L. Deesing, 61, of Mahanoy City, was cited after a one-vehicle crash at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 25 on the Burma Road in Blythe Township. She was uninjured.

Police said she was driving a 2019 Kia Sportage south when it left its lane of travel, striking several trees beyond the right shoulder of the road.

The car sustained disabling damages and was towed from the scene, police said.

• Police said a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was damaged when it was struck by a vehicle while it was parked on the east shoulder of Interstate 81 in Kline Township due to having a flat tire.

It happened at 11:04 a.m. Jan. 28. They said the driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene without contacting police or leaving information at the scene.

• Police said a 2019 Toyota Camry was towed from the scene of a crash at 3:06 a.m. Jan. 16 on Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township.

They said the vehicle was found unoccupied and the operator was not on scene or did not call 911 after it sustained disabling damages.

They said the vehicle was southbound and appeared to be traveling too fast for conditions when it left the roadway and struck an embankment off the right shoulder of the road.

• Damages were minor in a crash involving two tractor trailers at 7:20 a.m. Jan 23 on Route 443 (Clamtown Road) in West Penn Township.

Police said a 2023 Freightliner that was westbound raveled over the center yellow line while negotiating a turn in the road and crashed into a 1999 Freightliner that was eastbound at the time.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

• Police said they were called to a possible motor vehicle crash at 8:14 p.m. Jan. 18 and found the operator of a disabled vehicle at the scene to be under the influence of alcohol.

It happened at the intersection of Skyline Drive North and Mall Road in Ryan Township. Police said upon arrival they learned no accident occurred and found the disabled vehicle and its operator at the location.
