Carbon County commissioners
The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items during their weekly meeting on Thursday.
• Appointed Robert Pilla of Nesquehoning to the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
• Approved the annual report to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the balance of Act 89 funds, ending Dec. 31, 2023. The report shows there is $565,103.57, which can only be utilized for construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of bridges.
• Approved the annual report to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the balance of Act 44 funds, ending Dec. 31, 2023. The report shows there is $376,454.33, which can only be utilized for construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of bridges.
• Approved a non-exclusive license agreement with Ed and Lynn Humphreys, doing business as Jim Thorpe Trolley Company, for use of designated areas of Josiah White Park, Mauch Chunk Lake Park and the Carbon County Environmental Education Center for departures and arrivals. The agreement is effective until Dec. 31 and will automatically renew for three successive annual terms.
• Approved a lease agreement with Ed and Lynn Humphreys for a concession sales in Josiah White Park at an annual rent of $560.
• Adopted a commitment letter and resolution appointing David J. Bodnar, director of planning and development, as the designation agent for the hazard mitigation grant program on behalf of the county.
• Commissioner Wayne Nothstein dispelled rumors of tent city, located between Lehighton and Weissport, having upwards of 150 homeless residents living there. He said there are approximately 20 at this time.
Nothstein also thanked St. Peter in Weissport for creating a warming center. He said that one night during the extreme cold, there were approximately 14 people who slept at the center to stay warm.
• Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko reported that the Carbon County Parks and Recreation Commission will be reorganizing at its next meeting as a result of Thomas Wildoner leaving the commission.
• The commissioners reported that the heat at the Children and Youth building in Lehighton is working and technicians believe it was some parts in one of the boilers that had malfunctioned.
Personnel
• Courts resignation: Bridget M. Johnston of Jim Thorpe, domestic relations director, effective Feb. 9.
• Clerk of courts change of status: Amy S. Kubishin of Jim Thorpe, from deputy clerk to second deputy, effective Jan. 22.
• Sheriff resignation: James A. Golding of Jim Thorpe, special deputy sheriff, effective Jan. 18.
