Carbon honors Wildoner for parks role

For over four decades, Thomas Wildoner was an influential part in the operations of Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Last week, the lifelong Jim Thorpe resident stepped down from his role as chairman of the Carbon County Parks and Recreation Commission, finishing the book on his time serving the area that he has loved his whole life.

On Thursday, the Carbon County Board of Commissioners and David Horvath, Mauch Chunk Lake Park director, recognized Wildoner for his service and dedication to the recreational development that has become a gem for the county.

The commissioners adopted a resolution honoring the man, and presented it to his grandson, David Hauser, since Wildoner was not able to be present at the meeting.

The resolution highlights Wildoner’s long career in Jim Thorpe and Carbon County, from his time as a barber, to serving as Jim Thorpe’s mayor and a councilman to his efforts with the recreation commission since May 5, 1981.

“Thomas J. Wildoner was a dedicated board member who was actively involved with the Mauch Chunk Lake Park,” the resolution states, pointing out that he was “instrumental in advocating for the development and expansion of the park.”

“Improvements to the park during his tenure included the construction of a new park office, further development and expansion of the camping area to include 15 camping cottages, a new beach pavilion and first aid station, restroom improvements at both boat launches and acquisition of a fully-accessible fishing pier.”

Commissioners said Wildoner “not only understood and recognized the recreational value of the park for all to enjoy, but also the significant economic impact that came with the revitalization of the downtown Historic District of Jim Thorpe following the construction of the dam that eliminated the devastating floods and property damage.”

Horvath told Hauser that it was a pleasure working with his grandfather, adding that Wildoner was a wealth of knowledge and always had the best interest of the park and the community in mind.

“He always held the park close to his heart,” Horvath said. “He loved working for the public.”

Hauser said his grandfather is a role model to everyone in the family and has instilled his beliefs.

“His dedication to our community is unparalleled throughout Carbon County,” he said, adding that Wildoner sent his regards and wishes that he could have been at the meeting.
