Chili contest turns up the heat in Palmerton

It may have been cold outside, but the heat was on during the Winterfest and Chili Cook Off at St. John’s UCC on Columbia Avenue in Palmerton on Saturday.

Palmerton Mayor Don Hermann and state Rep. Doyle Heffley judged the 15 teams, competing for first, second, and third place honors.

The recipes of chili featured a variety of meats and heats.

Lori Fronheiser of Lehighton featured chili made with turkey and duck, and was right between mild and medium heat.

Terry Shaner of Lehighton made chili with beef and medium heat.

Wendy Troutman of Lehighton made chili with beef and pork.

Gabriel Brown of Lehighton had chili with beef and venison.

“The first place winner receives $300, a trophy, and an apron,” said Amy Brown, coordinator of the event. “Second place gets an apron, a medallion, and $200. The third place winner will receive an apron, a medallion, and $100.”

The public also had a chance to vote for Best Tasters Choice for their favorite chili, and Best Viewers Choice for the best display.

In addition to the chili, the church also offered food, baked goods, and a basket auction.

“Funds raised are for the Sunday school program, and some goes to the church,” Brown said.

Gabriel Brown of Lehighton was the overall winner, with Connie Haydt of Lehighton second and tied for third were Louise Zatori of Palmerton and Lori Fronheiser of Lehighton.

Each received $50, an apron, and a medallion.

Viewers Choice: Denise Martinez was the Viewers Choice winner, receiving a $25 gift card to 110 Tavern.

The Tasters Choice winner was Lori Fronheiser of Lehighton who received $50.
