A Philadelphia man has been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers and resisting arrest.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective David Roberts of the Franklin Township Police Department in the case against Ivan Palahnyn:

At 5:49 p.m. Sunday, a call was received at Carbon County Communications Center from a man who reported an out of control person in the 400 block of Forest Street in Lehighton.

Officer Chris Lekka of the Franklin Township Police Department responded, along with Cpl. Bruce Broyles and officer Justus Altmiller of the Lehighton Borough Police Department.

Upon arriving at 6:05 p.m., Palahnyn, 47, was out of control.

Palahnyn was wearing just boxer briefs and black socks and had a strong odor of an alcohol.

The victim identified damage to his vehicle, a 2021 BLK Cadillac Escalade, which included the rear cargo window broken out by Palahnyn, who had also broken another window on the nearby structure which served as a lodge for the camp.

The victim stated that he had to physically wrestle a large rock from Palahnyn before pinning him to the ground after the damage and injuring another woman who did not wish to proceed with charges.

As officers attempted to secure Palahnyn in handcuffs, he resisted, requiring officers to use force.

While Lekka was escorting Palahnyn to the patrol vehicle, Palahnyn made his body go limp and fell to the ground, causing Lekka to experience pain and discomfort to his right shoulder.

Lekka visited the emergency department of St. Luke’s Carbon Campus for further evaluation and treatment.

Once Palahnyn was in the patrol vehicle, he did begin to strike his head against the barred rear windows and also kicked at the patrol vehicle door.

Upon Broyles opening the rear door to restrain Palahnyn from injuring himself by banging his head on the steel bars, Palahnyn kicked Broyles multiple times before he could be shackled and restrained.

Palahnyn faces charges on two counts each of assault of law enforcement officer and simple assault, along with one count each of resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

Palahnyn is in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Jan. 24 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
