Lansford man pleads guilty in airport explosives case

A Lansford man facing federal charges for attempting to take an explosive on a plane last year pleaded guilty to two charges on Wednesday.

Marc Muffley, 41, appeared in U.S. District Court in Allentown to change his plea on charges of knowingly placing, or attempting to place, or attempting to have placed, an explosive on an aircraft, and possession and explosive in an airport.

Muffley has been in federal custody since his arrest. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $500,000 fine and a $200 special assessment, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Sentencing is set for May 7, an office spokeswoman said.

According to arrest papers, Muffley checked a suitcase containing circular compound granular powder consistent with commercial grade fireworks with two fuses attached at the Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown last February.

Agents defined the compound as an explosive, which posed a significant risk to the aircraft and passengers.

The baggage also contained a can of butane, a lighter, a pipe with white powder residue, a wireless drill with cordless batteries and two GFCI outlets taped together with black tape.
