Snow geese flock to Washington Township field

Naturalist Barry Reed photographed this flock of snow geese, about 12,000 to 15,000, Monday just off Oakwood Lane in Washington Township.

Reed said the flock descended on a 30-acre harvested corn field. He said the noise was unbelievable as flock after flock circled and then landed to feed on the waste grain still on the ground.

What looks like snow in the background is just flock after flock of snow geese. Their black wing tips highlight the nearly all white adults.

Some blue geese, a color morph of “snows,” can be seen as well.

Reed said he has never seen so many snow geese in his life and that he wasn’t able to photograph the thousand or more still circling the field looking for an “open place” to land.
