Carbon continues process to tear down building

Carbon County opened bids for the demolition of a blighted Lehighton building.

On Thursday, the two bids were opened and read during the commissioners’ weekly meeting for the demolition of 135-139 N. First St.

The low bidder was Northeast Industrial Services Corp. of Shamokin, which bid a total of $186,435. The bid includes two alternates.

Yannuzzi Group Inc. of Kinnelon, New Jersey, also submitted a bid of $571,000.

The board then tabled the bids for two weeks for further review and a recommendation on whether to award a contract or reject the bids.

Lehighton has been working to demolish the property for several months and is using Community Development Block Grant funds, as well as state funds for the project.

In August, borough council hired Keystone Consulting for $28,000 for the specifications for demolition.

The motion came after neighboring business owner Glenn Claypoole approached council about his interest in the condemned property; however council felt the building needs to come down because of its deteriorated conditions.
