Wargo named S. Hill council president
David Wargo, a 10-year member of Summit Hill Borough Council who was re-elected in November, was named president of the board during a reorganization meeting Wednesday.
He was nominated by William O’Gurek Jr. and was elected by a 6-0 vote.
O’Gurek was unanimously elected vice president.
Joseph Weber was the council’s choice for president pro tem.
Mayor Jeffrey Szczecina swore in officials elected to council in November.
Besides Wargo, he administered the oath to Karen Ruzicka, who was re-elected, and newcomer Lacey Gonzalez.
Another new member of council is Marlene Basiago, who was sworn-in by the mayor on Sunday. Basiago was unable to attend the reorganization meeting because of another commitment.
Basiago was elected to both a four-year term and a two-year term on council. She resigned from the two-year term, creating a vacancy the council hopes to fill at its next regular meeting, which is at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9.
The council said it will accept letters of interest for the vacancy until the end of business hours at the borough hall on Tuesday.
Wargo succeeds Michael Kokinda as council president. He had served in that capacity for many years.
Kokinda, who served on the council for nearly 24 years, lost in his re-election bid in November.
Kira Steber was reappointed secretary/treasurer at her contracted salary.
Attorney Robert Frycklund was retained as the borough solicitor.
Other appointments are:
• Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank, PLGIT depository.
• Todd Woodward, Chief of Police.
• Shawn Hoban, Fire Chief.
• Kevin Steber, the borough’s emergency management coordinator.
• Daniel Matika, interim zoning officer at the rate of $17 per hour on an as-needed basis.
• Scott Bieber, sewage enforcement officer, and Ian Farrell, alternate sewage enforcement officer.
• Attorney Kelly Jamison, solicitor to the zoning hearing board.
• Arro, an engineering firm based in Orwigsburg, the borough’s consulting engineer.
• Lehigh Engineering of Walnutport, maintenance code enforcement agency.
Reappointments to various boards are:
• Summit Hill Water Authority, Robert Collevechio, five-year term.
• Borough Planning Commission, Wayne Gryzik, five-year term.
The council said there are vacancies on the Planning Commission, Zoning Hearing Board and Appeals Board.
