Lansford seeks splash pad grant

Lansford Borough Council approved applying for a $1.5 million grant for a splash pad Wednesday night, as members attempted to wrap up year-end business.

Some other items on the special meeting agenda remain outstanding, including hiring a part-time borough secretary, a contract with the new police chief and rental unit complaints.

Council will apply for a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant to develop a splash pad at the pool complex. The grant application must be completed and submitted by Jan. 12.

Council President Bruce Markovich said state Sen. David Argall’s office suggested the borough look at this grant for the splash pad improvements.

This summer, council decided against a new pool or additional repairs and renovations to the current pool, and shifted focus to a splash pad in conjunction with the current baby pool.

A new pool or renovations and repairs would have cost $3 to $4 million without the additional costs to staff, operate and maintain a pool facility. A splash pad will cost less, not require lifeguards and have lower water and chemical costs.

Funds raised by the Lansford Friends of Recreation/Pool toward the pool repairs will continue to support recreation in the borough.

Councilman Jay Doyle voted no on the grant application, as he didn’t believe a splash pad benefited all of the community.
