2023 in review: L. Towamensing campground gets approval

Development of the Getaway House campground in Lower Towamensing Township hasn’t begun despite receiving an approval from the township’s zoning hearing board in May.

The company had requested a special exception to the zoning ordinance in April to change the use of the property to a campground. Getaway House owns 190 acres from Forest Inn Road to Walnut Drive.

Wintergreen Road runs through the property, and Getaway planned to place the campground on land on both sides of Wintergreen Road. The campground would not extend out as far as Forest Inn Road.

The area is zoned rural conservation. A campground is a permitted use in a rural conservation zone. Another section of the property that was not going to be used in the campground is zoned R-1 for low-density residential district.

In receiving approval for the campground, Getaway was required to keep the maximum number of camping units to the 77 and to locate them according to the plans that were provided. If Getaway wanted to expand in the future, then it would have to get approval from the zoning hearing board.

After receiving the approval, Tom Katelhon, an engineer with Kimley Horn representing Getaway House, said the next step was to submit the land development plans. He didn’t have a timeline for the campground.

RoniSue Ahner, the secretary for the municipality, said she has not received anything and doesn’t know of paperwork being submitted to the township regarding the campground. Neither does Duane Dellecker, the building code officer. Dellecker said he hasn’t seen anything since they were granted approval.

Getaway House was contacted for comment, but did not respond. The property did not come up on an internet search as being for sale.
