Construction Mechanic Gary E. Beaver, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Beaver Jr. of Lehighton, attended a sunrise celebration recently in Antartica.

Many of the men wore beards, since beards provide extra warmth. For the men at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica, it was the first time they had seen sunrise in over four months.For Beaver, the sunrise also means a trip home. As soon as the sun thaws the ice enough, replacements will arrive and the men of Detachment Alpha will return to the U.S.
