Road paving project draws complaints in Jim Thorpe

A recent paving project along Race Street in Jim Thorpe is not sitting well with at least one borough business owner.

Since work was done last Thursday, ShelliHolland, owner of Horizons Gift Store, 105 Race St., said customers have to step over a strip of tar in front of her shop, or risk tracking tar in the store."The street looks horrible because it wasn't paved up to the buildings," Holland said. "It's making quite the mess in my store."A trip to Jim Thorpe's council meeting on Thursday night yielded an encouraging answer for Holland."I was told the project wasn't done and they would be back on Friday," she said. When the project was not continued on Friday, Holland went to the borough office and said she was told the work was finished.Council President Betsy Ahner said Monday the borough planned to call contractor, Pennsy Supply, which did the work. The Wapwallopen-based company also did paving on portions of Fern Street, Ahner said."We paid to have the work done, so we need to get the contractor involved in developing a solution," Ahner said. "We could put sand down, but that isn't a real good solution because then customers will just be tracking sand into the shops."Borough officials said the project was paid for out of liquid fuels money that comes in from the state each year to fix roads.Attempts to contact a representative from Pennsy Supply were unsuccessful.Holland closed her store Thursday and moved everything from in front of her store. Since reopening Friday, she has asked customers to sign a petition if they felt the paving work was unsatisfactory. By Sunday, she had over 100 signatures."I'm hoping we can solve this without having to use the petition," Holland said. "If they just would have paved up to the buildings, it would have alleviated the tar streak and made the street look so much nicer."
