Woman rescued from Lehigh River

A woman was plucked from the waters of the Lehigh River Saturday afternoon when she became stranded on a pier of the Weissport bridge. The incident began at 3 p.m. when people in the area of Bankway in Lehighton heard cries for help. They discovered the rafter in the center of the river. Her raft was against a large concrete pier of the structure on its side, and the victim was sitting atop of it. The Lehighton Fire Department River Rescue team used a boat to reach the woman, taking her to safety along the shore. She was evaluated at the scene by Lehighton paramedics. Lehighton police and a deputy of the Pennsylvania Waterways Commission wereat the scene.
