Proposed firing range under review in Nesquehoning

A proposed firing range on the Broad Mountain in Nesquehoning is under review in the borough.

On Tuesday evening, the Nesquehoning Zoning Hearing board listened as Frank Shubeck, the Carbon County Prison work release director, outlined the firing range, which would be built by the county on county-owned property and used strictly by corrections officers at the prison, the county sheriff's office and probation officers. The hearing was to see if a zoning permit would be issued for the project. The plans call for a 75-foot by 150-foot range with no proposed buildings. It would be used during daytime hours for certifying officers.Daniel Miscavige, Carbon County Prison Board solicitor, said a few residents voiced their concerns at the hearing and had questions about the range.Shubeck tried to address them as best he could. The zoning hearing board will now draft a formal letter to send to the prison with their decision. Once that is submitted, residents have 30 days to appeal the decision before the project can begin. The plan for the range has been in the works for the last year, and has gone before the borough and Carbon County Planning Commission.
