A state trooper sustained minor injuries in a traffic incident at 10:51 Tuesday night on Route 22 in Whitehall Township. He was not identified in a state police press release.
State police at the Belfast barracks said it happened when an officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop of a Honda Accord for reckless driving in the area of mile marker 323 in Hanover Township. Police said the driver of the Honda fled at a high rate of speed to avoid apprehension and tried to merge onto the Fullerton Avenue off-ramp, failing to do so on a sharp right curve on the wet roadway.
Police said the fleeing vehicle traveled through the grass and onto the berm, where it struck a light pole and embankment before overturning onto its driver’s side facing west, partially on both the Fullerton Avenue on-ramp and the right lane of Rt. 22 westbound.
Police said while the trooper was attempting to make an arrest on the occupant of the Honda, the overturned vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer that was traveling in the right lane of Rt. 22. This caused the overturned vehicle to spin clockwise, striking the trooper.
Police said the driver of the Honda was taken into custody and charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. The suspect was transported to the Lehigh County Central Booking Center, Allentown, where bail was set at $5,000 unsecured.
