Haas named president of Palmerton School Board

On the third try, the Palmerton Area School Board elected its president Tuesday night.

After three roll call votes, directors Sherry Haas and Stacey Connell were in the running to serve one year as board president.

On a 5-4 vote, Haas won.

Voting in favor of Haas were directors Brandon Mazepa, newcomer Alyson Krawchuk, Earl Paules, Danielle Paules and Haas.

In favor of Connell were directors MaryJo King, newcomer Kris Schaible, Erin Snyder and Connell.

In the first vote, Haas, Connell and Earl Paules received nominations.

Because there was no majority, the board had to vote a second time, but again failed to reach a majority.

After Haas was elected Mazepa and Snyder were nominated for vice president. Mazepa won on a 5-4 vote, with Earl Paules, Haas, Danielle Paules, Krawchuk and Mazepa in favor.

Voting for Snyder were Schaible, Connell, King and Snyder.

In other appointments, Danielle Paules will serve as the board’s Pennsylvania School Board Association liaison and on the Carbon Career and Technical Institute’s Joint Operating Committee - both one-year terms.

Krawchuk will represent the board on the Carbon County Area Vocational-Technical School Authority for five years.

The board also accepted the resignation of Haas as treasurer of the school board, effective Dec. 5.

It then appointed King as treasurer, effective Dec. 6 through June 30, 2024, at the rate of $400 per year prorated.

Connell congratulated everyone on their positions, including the newcomers to the board.

Haas said she was “just looking forward to working together.”

Board workshops will remain the first Tuesday of the month, with regular board meetings on the third Tuesday of the month.

Both meetings will start at 5:30 p.m.
