Inmate charged with ethnic intimidation

An inmate at the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning faces charges of ethnic intimidation after multiple incidents.

Chance Whiteman, 23, was arraigned Monday on charges of ethnic intimidation, terroristic threats and harassment. District Judge Casimir Kosciolek set bail at $10,000.

According to court papers, prison officials conduct searches of randomly selected cells to curb contraband in the facility.

Whiteman used profanity and ethnic slurs toward a corrections officer during one of the searches of his cell last month, and threatened to kill the guard, court papers said.

The warden also reported previous incidents involving Whiteman and the corrections officer, which included Whiteman pacing and yelling, “white power,” while throwing his fist in the air, court papers said.

The warden also provided county detectives with a written statement from an inmate, who was upset with Whiteman’s treatment of the corrections officer, court papers said.

In the statement, the inmate said Whiteman continually used ethnic slurs when dealing with the guard, shouted over him and threatened to kill him, court papers said.

Whiteman refused to speak to county detectives regarding the incident.

The warden told detectives that he believed Whiteman was targeting the corrections officer because of his race, court papers said.
