One displaced from Lansford fire

One person is displaced and two cats are missing following an early morning fire Thursday in Lansford.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a double home at 504 E. Kline Ave. at 4:05 a.m., Lansford Fire Chief Joe Greco said.

Flames were coming out of a rear kitchen window when firefighters arrived, and the occupants of both sides of the home were outside, he said.

Firefighters initially had some issues with accessing the home, but quickly laid fire lines from one of the trucks, Greco said.

The fire, which appears to be accidental, was contained to the kitchen, and there is smoke and water damage on the first floor, he said.

A water pipe on the second floor also burst, Greco said. The plastic supply line was located above the room where the fire started, he said.

There was no damage on the 506 E. Kline Ave. side of the home, Greco said, but there may be a smoke odor. The resident on that side of the home was able to return.

The resident of 504 E. Kline was displaced, Greco said. One of three cats did make it out, but the resident was looking for two cats, which may have perished in the fire, he said.

The resident was using a space heater, which tripped a circuit breaker, Greco said. She then switched on the wrong breaker, turning on the stove and igniting material on top, he said.

Fire crews were cleaning up between 5:30 and 6 a.m., and returned to the station before 7 a.m., Greco said.

Firefighters from Lansford, Summit Hill and Coaldale responded, in addition to crews from Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe on a second alarm for manpower, Greco said.
