State police release holiday crash data
The Pennsylvania State Police has released its annual Thanksgiving Holiday Crash and Enforcement report.
During the Thanksgiving travel period of Nov. 22-26, state police investigated 979 vehicle crashes resulting in four fatalities. Police said alcohol was a factor in 73 of the crashes.
Troopers arrested 542 individuals for driving under the influence and issued more than 10,000 speeding citations over the five-day holiday weekend. Troopers also issued 1,187 citations for failing to wear a seat belt and 133 citations for not securing children in safety seats.
The department’s overall statistics are as follows:
Crash Data: 979 total crashes, 4 fatal crashes, 4 persons killed, 197 persons injured and 73 alcohol-related crashes.
Enforcement Data: 542 DUI arrests made, 10,590 speeding citations issued, 133 child seat citations issued, 1,187 seat belt citations issued and 18,870 other citations issued.
A breakdown of local troop activity is as follows:
Troop L, Reading (Schuylkill, Berks and Lebanon counties) – Crash Data: 48 crashes investigated, 11 persons injured and four alcohol-related crashes investigated; Enforcement Data: 30 DUI arrests made, 836 speeding citations issued, 6 child seat citations issued, 57 seat belt citations issued, 23 seat belt warnings issued, 1,176 other citations issued and 21 self-initiated criminal arrests made.
Troop M, Bethlehem (Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks counties) – Crash Data: 68 crashes investigated, 9 persons injured and 2 alcohol-related crashes investigated; Enforcement Data: 27 DUI arrests made, 302 speeding citations issued, 12 child seat citations issued, 47 seat belt citations issued, 58 seat belt warnings issued, 1,198 other citations issued and 34 self-initiated criminal arrests made.
Troop N, Reading (lower Luzerne, Carbon, Monroe and Columbia counties) – Crash Data: 51 crashes investigated, 1 fatal accident investigated, 1 person killed, 11 persons injured and 6 alcohol-related crashed investigated; Enforcement Data: 56 DUI arrests made, 805 speeding citations issued, 30 child seat citations issued, 119 seat belt citations issued, 51 seat belt warnings issued, 1,812 other citations issued and 34 self-initiated criminal arrests made.
