Philly man drowns in Pocono lake on Thanksgiving day

A Philadelphia man drowned in lake waters in Monroe County on Thanksgiving day, according to Pocono Mountain Regional Police.

They said Miguel A. Lopez Jr., 31, was pronounced dead after the incident that happened at 2:56 p.m. in the lake near 125 Beaver Dam Road, Long Pond.

Police said they and numerous search and rescue teams were called for a reported drowning and learned three juveniles accompanied by Lopez were kayaking on the lake when one of the juveniles’ kayak overturned, dumping him in the water. Police said the juvenile was wearing a life jacket.

Lopez, they said, who was not wearing a life jacket, entered the water in an attempt to turn the overturned kayak right-side up, but was unable to do so. They said as the juveniles and Lopez were attempting to swim out of the lake, Lopez was unable to remain above water. Search and rescue team members later recovered his body.
