Turnpike incidents

State police at the Pocono barracks reported on the following incidents on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike:

• A 2016 Honda struck a deer at 12:21 a.m. Nov. 9 at mile marker 70.5 in Washington Township.

Police said Justin A. Lutz, 46, of Williamsport, was northbound when the deer entered the right lane from the left side of the road and was struck.

Lutz and a passenger, Maxwell J. Wilhelm, 35, also of Williamsport, escaped injuries.

The car was towed from the scene.

• Police said an unknown vehicle struck a guide rail end at the Mahoning Valley Interchange of the NE extension around 6:11 p.m. Oct. 31.

Police said the driver of the vehicle attempted to make a U-turn before going through the interchange. It is unknown what kind of damages the vehicle sustained.

• Neel Samant, 26, of Syracuse, New York, was uninjured when a vehicle he was driving struck a deer at mile marker 87 in Penn Forest Township.

Police said he was driving a 2019 Kia southbound when the deer entered his lane of travel. The Kia sustained disabling damages.

• Police said the front driver’s-side wheel of a 2012 GMC Sierra came off of it while its driver, William A. Vong, 58, of Philadelphia, was northbound.

It happened at 9 a.m. Nov. 13 at mile marker 62 in North Whitehall Township. Police said the vehicle crossed over the concrete barrier and struck a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe operated southbound by Stewart A. Shapiro, 60, of West Grove.

No one was injured in the incident.

The Sierra sustained damage to its front driver’s side wheel bearing. The Santa Fe was able to be driven from the scene.

• Walter L. Derby Jr., 43, of White Haven, was not injured when a 2018 Subaru Impreza he was driving struck a deer at 5:04 p.m. Nov. 9.

It happened at mile marker 115.2 in Pittston Township. The car had disabling damages.

• Deivy Santana Lopez, 20, and Edwin Fortunato Tapia, 20, both of Hazleton, are facing drug possession charges after a traffic stop police made at mile marker 61 in North Whitehall Township.

They stopped a 2019 Honda Accord at 11:10 a.m. Nov. 15 after clocking it at 97 mph in a 70 mph zone. Following a consent search of the vehicle, police found them to be in possession of marijuana.

• Gregg L. Brunori, 47, of Archbald, and three passengers were involved in a crash when a 2005 Cadillac Escalade struck a deer at 3:39 a.m. Nov. 17.

It happened at mile marker 86.9 in Penn Forest Township when the vehicle struck a deer that was standing in the left lane of travel. Police said the vehicle was driven to its final rest on the west berm of the road.

• John J. Glacken Jr., 70, of Havertown, and a passenger, were uninjured when a 2017 Lexus he was driving swerved to avoid striking a deer at 9:15 p.m. Nov. 16.

It happened at mile marker 83.7 in Penn Forest Township. Police said he was northbound when he swerved the vehicle, which struck the center concrete barrier, crossed the roadway and struck an embankment before overturning.
