Nesquehoning Borough Council
Nesquehoning Borough Council discussed or acted on the following items during its monthly meeting last week.
• Introduced new borough secretary/treasurer Deborah Delfranco.
• Commended all organizers and volunteers for making the Carbon County Veterans Day parade a success.
• Approved new addresses for Narrow Valley Sports Complex. The new addresses include 20, 40 and 50 Market St.
• Discussed a phone call with Reading and Northern Railroad officials regarding Tippets Road. The railroad wants to improve the crossing, which is a private crossing, however, one side of the road, is not a public road owned by the borough. Further discussion will take place after some council members noted that the railroad has not returned calls regarding other matters involving the borough and railroad properties.
• Announced winter parking is now in effect and is the same as last year. The borough is also prepared for the upcoming winter season.
• Approved a sludge hauling contract be awarded to Environmental Service Corp., which submitted the lowest extended price bid of $44,325.
• Councilman Bruce Nalesnik said that the wiring has been installed in the New Columbus park, but the borough is waiting on PPL to install a new pole for the project before it can be completed.
• Nalesnik also said that work on a grant application for the Industrial Road reconstruction project is progressing.
• Council announced that the borough Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1 in the former St. Patrick’s Cemetery, located across the street from Turkey Hill on West Catawissa Street. Following the lighting, everyone is invited to Meeds UMC for refreshments and caroling.
• With cold winter upon us, it is reminded that residents make sure their heaters are in proper working order and smoke detectors have new batteries.
• The recreation commission will hold the borough Children’s Christmas Party at 5 p.m. on Dec. 10. The party is open to all children of the borough ages 0 to 10. The party is held at the recreation center on West Railroad Street. The deadline to sign your child up is Nov. 27. Registration is at https://form.jotform.com/233077052670049.
