Wyatt Smith of Lehighton achieves rank of Eagle Scout
Wyatt Smith, of Clamtown Troop 755 in New Ringgold, received the rank of Eagle Scout at a court of honor held on Sunday Nov. 12 at the East Penn Sporting Club in Lehighton.
Since joining scouting in 2014, Wyatt has held numerous leadership positions within the troop, including Scribe, Quartermaster, and Patrol Leader. He has earned a variety of merit badges such as welding, robotics, communications, cooking, and wilderness survival. To date, he has earned 33 merit badges, 10 of which will allow him to earn his gold palm.
For his Eagle Scout project, Wyatt decided to honor the memory of his late great-grandfather, Orville J. Wehr, by building two raised flower boxes for the residents of Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hometown.
Bob Rautzhan of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. was on hand to present Wyatt with a certificate of congratulations and spoke about the similarities between earning the Eagle rank with that of preparing to be part of a submarine crew.
Also, Selina Winchester and Carol Etheridge from the office of U.S. Rep. Susan Wild were in attendance to honor Wyatt with proclamations, certificates, and an American flag that was flown over the Capitol building.
Wyatt also received dozens of congratulatory letters and certificates sent by other government departments and officials, agencies and other dignitaries who could not attend.
Wyatt is a junior at Carbon County Career and Technical Institute. He is enrolled in precision machining. Wyatt also enjoys high school activities such as wrestling and track and field. He also enjoys riding his dirt bike.
After graduation, Wyatt plans to work in the machining field. He lives with his parents, Jeremy and Vanessa Smith, along with sister Kailyn, 12, and brother Clay, 9, in Lehighton.
At the court of honor, Wyatt thanked his fellow scouts and family, and presented Damon Krall, Blake Tharp, and Rodney Wehr with the scouting “mentor” pin for playing important roles in his journey along the trail to Eagle. He also presented grandparent pins to his grandparents, Marty and Linda Klotz, and David Smith.
Chartered in 1950, Troop 755 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops is Schuylkill County, and Wyatt is the 66th scout to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. More information about the troop can be found on their Facebook page “Clamtown Troop 755.”
