Cakes, cookies decorated for Turkey Day

Kathy Gieniec admits she’s no artist but yet, she was making turkeys effortlessly on a small cake with colored icing. The finished product looked like it was done by a professional.

Gieniec, chairman of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission, was one of about a dozen people who participated in a cake decorating class hosted by the Rec Commission at the Hilltop Community Center on Sunday.

The participants put turkey, pumpkin and sunflower designs on cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

Daughn Edmunds was the instructor. After coating their cakes with white icing, they drew their creations on them using piping tips filled with orange, green, brown and yellow frostings.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Gieniec said. “It’s easy.”

Her adult son, David, agreed, holding up a cookie with a brown turkey with a yellow, orange and brown plume.

Lynda Carlson opted for a large sunflower design coating her cake.

Edmunds said that such decorating is simple with the right tips on the piping and the proper way to use them.

“Anybody can do it,” she said, and proved it by having the individuals make their unique creations.

Gieniec has been working on various unique programs with the Recreation Commission.

On Saturday, she hosted a class on terrarium planting for children.

A winter-themed paint-and-snack event for children will be held on Dec. 15 at the Hilltop Community Center. Children will paint reindeer at the event.

Registration can be made on the Commission’s Facebook page or at the Summit Hill Borough Hall during regular business hours. There is a $25 registration fee.
