Monroe man charged after high-speed chase
A Saylorsburg man faces multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing in Monroe County, police said.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by state police at Lehighton in the case against Carl Klinger:
At 1:42 p.m. Sept. 30, a woman and her father told state police about her ex-boyfriend, Klinger, 47, of Polk Township.
The woman said she received text messages from Klinger which included threats toward law enforcement.
Klinger also sent a photo of himself holding a silver handgun pointed directly under his chin.
Klinger is prohibited from possessing a firearm because of an aggravated assault conviction in 1994.
Klinger was charged with persons not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms, along with terroristic threats.
In that case, Klinger is in the Monroe County Prison in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by state police at Fern Ridge at around 6:51 p.m. that day, Fern Ridge troopers were requested to assist PSP Lehighton patrol with a felony arrest warrant along with a mental health commitment for Klinger.
Police surrounded the residence and attempted to get Klinger to surrender, but Klinger went out of the residence through the left side door and drove a Jeep toward two troopers who were standing in the yard. He continued driving into the woods, parallel with Jonas Road.
The chase ended when Klinger crashed on Pheasant Run Road.
Klinger was taken into custody and taken to Lehigh Valley Pocono Hospital.
A search of Klinger’s car uncovered four hypodermic needles, three smoking devices and a stolen Pennsylvania license plate.
Klinger faces charges on two counts each of recklessly endangering another person, one count of driving under influence of alcohol/controlled substance, receiving stolen property, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a license, operating a vehicle in willful and wanton disregard for safety of persons or property, careless driving, and traffic violations.
Klinger had a preliminary hearing earlier this month before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
He is in the Monroe County Prison in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail.
