Powerful Blue Mountain blanks Raiders

ORWIGSBURG – There are no tomorrows when it comes to the district tournament play.

Win and advance. Lose and stow the balls and cages away until next season

The Tamaqua girls soccer team saw its season come down to a District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal round matchup against powerful Blue Mountain - one of the finest programs in the Schuykill League and a seven-time league champion, including this season.

The No. 2 seeded Eagles dominated from start to finish, defeating the Blue Raiders, 6-0, on Wednesday to eliminate them from the playoffs.

The win for Blue Mountain (17-3-1) was nary a surprise. The Eagles were quicker and extremely athletic, and had defeated Tamaqua in both their regular season meetings.

How dominating was Blue Mountain? It did not allow the Raiders to cross midfield with the ball until there was 23 minutes to play in the second half. By then the game was well out of reach.

“They’re so good, they make very few mistakes and are so much faster than we are,” said Tamaqua coach Clem McCarroll. “We knew we had our work cut out for us coming in. They’re physical, fast and they’re shots were like missiles coming in.”

Blue Mountain kept pressure on Tamaqua goalkeepers Veronica Scott and Cecilia Ulicny all game long.

“I thought Veronica did an outstanding job,” McCarroll mentioned about his starting junior. “Blue Mountain were relentless, and the number of shots was pretty overwhelming.”

The winners rifled off a total of 36 shots, including 20 in the first half. The Eagles converted four times in the opening 40 minutes.

Kylie Conway put her team on top with 32:06 still left in the first half, and came right back and scored her second goal at 25:09. Teammate Sophia Spolski made it 3-0 before the Eagles got the fourth score of the half off the foot of Haley Scheuer.

“We wanted to defend number 9 (senior Allison Hoover) who is a two-time all-state player,” McCarroll said. “We did a good job on her. But they have so many other players who can score.”

In the second half, the Eagles finally got Hoover in the flow as she scored off an assist by Cameryn Campbell with 9:52 remaining in the contest. Then with 7:25 to play, Paige Koch got the final goal off an assist by Hannah Glenn.

“We had a nice season considering we got a seventh-seed,” McCarroll said. “Blue Mountain is one of the top teams in the area. I thought we did a good job overall.”

FOUR GOING … Four seniors played their final game for the Raiders - Alexis Bowman, Ava Agosti, Abby Leinbach and Sarah Hope.

FIRING AWAY … Tamaqua was shutout on shots, while its goalkeepers combined for 23 saves.
