Leighton field hockey falls to Wilson in OT
WILSON - Lehighton put up a valiant effort as it battled host Wilson down to the wire before eventually suffering a 1-0 overtime loss in the District 11 Class 1A field hockey quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Wilson scored the winning goal against goalie Grayson Frey five minutes into the extra period.
Lehighton coach Emma Sawyer noted that her club adjusted during the game, but it couldn’t find the net.
The Indians best chance came a minute into the overtime period when Gabby Brown and Brielle Frable had a two-on-one breakaway, but Frable’s shot was turned away, as was Ava Kistner follow up shot.
“It was an evenly-matched game,” said Sawyer. “It was back and forth during the entire game. I thought we played hard, but we couldn’t convert.”
With the loss, Lehighton ended its season winless in its last 10 contests (0-9-1) after it stormed out to an 8-2 start to the season.
“I don’t think it was one specific thing,” Sawyer said about the Indians’ struggles down the stretch. “As a team, we let up a little. We did well at the beginning of the season, but we got too comfortable with it.”
The Indians will lose eight seniors from their current roster, but Sawyer is optimistic with 11 eighth-graders who will join the program in the fall. Sawyer will also look to the junior core of Frable, Natalie Blair, Anna Howland, and Allee Maini to set the pace for next season.
“We all grew as a team, and played hard even though we didn’t get the results we were hoping for late in the season,” Sawyer said. “I’m proud of what we did.”

REMATCH ... The two teams met during the regular season, with Lehighton winning, 2-0.
STATS ... Wilson recorded 11 corners, while Lehighton had just two.
LEARNING LESSON ... “This year taught me to roll with the punches,” Sawyer said about her first year as the team’s head coach.
PLAYING THROUGH IT ... Indian senior leader Maggie Pagotto suffered a partially torn meniscus during the team’s late-season slide, but Pagotto continued to play and was in the lineup Wednesday.
