Lansford councilman waives hearing, charges added

A Lansford borough councilman on Wednesday waived criminal charges stemming from an assault that sent a man to a hospital with traumatic injuries to Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.

Jay Doyle, 49, of West Water Street, was originally charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment following the Aug. 16 incident.

Police amended the complaint Aug. 31, adding additional charges of aggravated assault – attempt to cause or cause bodily injury with a deadly weapon; terroristic threats, two additional counts of simple assault and reckless endangerment.

The additional charges stem from further investigation in which witnesses told police that Doyle had removed a folding pocket knife and placed it to the throat of the victim, threatening to slit his throat, court papers said.

Police, who obtained a search warrant, recovered a gold folding “CAT” knife from Doyle’s home and also a pair of slides worn by Doyle from the county prison.

Borough police also obtained additional video footage showing the assault. The recording shows Doyle approach the victim, a verbal dispute occur and Doyle is seen striking the victim in the head with a single punch, court papers said.

The victim fell to the ground, and Doyle continued to strike the man in the head by punching and kicking him, court papers said.

Doyle is seen walking away, and then approaches the man a second time, pulling a folding knife from his pocket and placing it to the forehead of the man, court papers said.

In addition to video, witnesses identified Doyle, saying he struck the man in the head with fists and then kicked the victim in the head while on the ground, court papers said.

The man suffered traumatic injuries, which resulted in internal bleeding, court papers said.

Doyle told police the man started the incident by pushing him, and calling his daughter a derogatory name, court papers said.

Doyle appeared in district court in Lansford with his attorney, and waived all of the charges to county court before his scheduled preliminary hearing.

Doyle, who was jailed following the Aug. 16 assault, was released on $50,000 bail on Aug. 23, and remains free on bail.
