Lansford Borough Council

Lansford Borough Council conducted the following business last week:

• Approved a zoning permit for Growing Minds Preschool, and the use of a playground was on the condition of the preschool being insured and indemnifying the borough.

• Approved the minimum municipal obligation for the police pension fund for 2024, in the amount of $13,663.88.

• Set Trick or Treat Night in the borough from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

• Re-advertised for a full-time public works employee.

• Approved installation of two light poles for the oversized vehicle parking area on Dock Street.

• Approved opening separate checking accounts for deposit of current and future grants, and another checking account for excess state Liquid Fuels. Council President Bruce Markovich said the latter would be for any unused funds that could be pooled for a larger street or road project in the future.

• Approved reducing the sewer transmission fee from $60 a year to $50 a year, beginning in January.

• Approved spending up to $2,500 on street repairs in the 800 block of East Bertsch Street.

• Approved Billitier Electric replacing lights, photocells, timers and GFI receptacles in Kennedy Park at a cost of $4,961. Markovich said the main reason for the work was to illuminate a flagpole.

• Approved opening the train station on Nov. 11 for a tour by 104 members of the Lehigh and New England Railroad Preservation Society.

• Tabled action on hiring a rental enforcement and/or code enforcement officer, pending a presentation from ARRO Engineering.

• Approved adding a streetlight in a dark area between the 400-blocks of West Bertsch and West Abbott streets.

• Heard from resident Denise Leibensperger about council members being reimbursed for mileage, when they are already paid a stipend for their service.

• Heard from resident Michele Bartek about a police officer allegedly stealing time on a time card, questioning the borough’s action. Solicitor Bob Yurchak said they would not comment on the issue, as it’s an internal personnel matter that has been resolved.
