Police cite man for fake license plate, covering VIN

A Philadelphia man faces several traffic offenses after police found he was driving with a fake license plate and covering the vehicle’s VIN number.

State Police at Pocono Trooper Joe Splendido reported the charges against Brandon Bernard Lee, 34.

Police said traffic stop was conducted on Oct. 6 on a white Hyundai Sonata, which was going south on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near mile post 78 in Franklin Township.

The car was clocked going 89 in a 70 mph zone.

During the stop, troopers learned the vehicle’s license plate that was displayed was fictitious and not registered for the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Lee, also refused to provided the vehicle’s registration and insurance information, and told troopers he did not have a valid driver’s license.

He provided his name and date of birth, but refused to give any other information about his identity. He also did not allow anyone, including a tow truck operator who was called to the scene, to enter his vehicle.

Troopers observed that Lee had covered the vehicle’s VIN number on the windshield with material.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and Lee was released.

Through a search warrant, Lee’s identity was confirmed through a state photo; and a records check on the vehicle showed that it had not been registered in years and had not been inspected since 2016. The search also showed that the vehicle was last registered to a person in New Jersey.

The previous owner was contacted and told troopers that they traded the vehicle into a dealership several years ago and that they have no ownership or interest in the vehicle.

Charges were filed against Lee for disorderly conduct, driving on a suspended driver’s license, failure to produce identification, speeding, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, no insurance, and displaying a fictitious license plate.
