Carbon awards roof contract
The contract has been approved for a roof replacement project in Lehighton.
On Thursday, the Carbon County Commissioners approved a contract with H&P Construction of Kulpmont for replacing the roof at the Lehighton Senior/Recreation Center. H&P was the low bidder at $70,440.60.
The funds for the project come from Community Development Block Grant 2019 funds.
In other CDBG matters, the commissioners approved the 2023 CDBG projects for both entitlement and non-entitlement communities.
Entitlement communities include Franklin Township, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Mahoning Township, Palmerton and Lansford.
Lansford regained its entitlement status following the last census, which showed the borough had over 4,100 residents.
To become an entitlement community, a municipality must have at least 4,000 residents and meet low- to moderate-income guidelines. Lansford was taken off the entitlement communities list following the 2010 census after it was reported that there were only 3,946 residents.
The projects include:
• Franklin Township: Red Hill Road Drainage improvements phase 3, grant amount $98,514.
• Jim Thorpe: Home rehabilitation, grant amount $100,195.
• Lansford: Demolition and clearing 151 and 151½ West Ridge St., grant amount $96,119 with $40,000 ARPA funds.
• Lehighton: Street improvements on North Main Lane and reconstruct Stanley Hoffman Boulevard parking lot, grant amount $108,448.
• Mahoning Township: Street improvements on West Side Road from Maple Drive toward Woodlawn, grant amount $97,456.
• Palmerton: Street improvements to Mary Ann Alley from Tunnel Street to Old Mauch Chunk Street, grant amount $112,290.
For non-entitlement communities, municipalities must apply for a portion of the funds allocated each year by the county. This year, a total of $203,637 was allocated for non-entitlement projects.
Recipients include:
• East Side Borough: Centre Street playground improvements, $84,000.
• Nesquehoning: Street improvements on East Diaz Avenue from Messina Street to Padua Street, $82,000.
• Packer Township: Construct ADA handicap ramps at the Packer Township building, $37,637.
