Jim Thorpe Borough is set to take action on much needed roof repairs at its existing public service garage on Ninth Street.
The municipality received a repair estimate of $4,650 to address roof problems that threaten the building as winter approaches. Council is slated to take action next week.
The repairs, borough officials said during a workshop Thursday night, are considered essential to maintain the structure while the borough explores potential future uses for the facility.
Borough Manager Maureen Sterner stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that one of the leaks is perilously close to the electric service within the building.
“Even though we are moving the public service department out of the building, the borough is planning to keep the building so we do need to take immediate action before winter sets in to help save it,” Council President Greg Strubinger said.
The public service department is using the garage as it awaits the construction of a new facility on property owned by the borough near its water department on West Broadway.
Councilman Robert Schaninger, during a meeting last year, expressed his vision for the garage’s future use as a community recreation center.
“It measures 93-feet by 93-feet, which is much larger than the high school gymnasium,” Schaninger said. “I hope the borough would go in that direction.”
The intended purpose of the building, Sterner said, will guide the borough’s decisions regarding the type of roof required when a full-scale replacement is discussed.
